Going Green with Gear Up

Clyde Wind Farm and SSE Renewables Community Fund has awarded £ 117,479.86 to Gear Up.
The grant award was part of a funding partnership with SLC Renewable Energy Funds totalling £293,699.65 to support the development and roll-out of a community focussed active travel project targeting the Fund's local communities.
Gear Up, a social enterprise of Healthy Valleys, aims to empower communities through active travel, offering bike and e-Bike hires and loans, maintenance and cycling workshops, and led rides and walks.
Gear Up's Community & Team Lead, Gerry Timoney manages the project, supported by Education Worker, Adrienne Grehan and volunteers and sessional staff, who will run community events and awareness raising days, establish relationships with schools, community groups and local businesses.
Project activities will include:
Awareness raising events
Supporting people to start, or return to cycling for everyday trips and leisure, in support of better physical and mental health.
Free lessons and guided rides.
Intergenerational programmes to promote good health through active travel for all ages.
Free bike loans to those who would not otherwise be able to access a bike, as well as donations of upcycled bikes.
Promoting cycling and walking for sustainable transport in and around Clydesdale.
Signposting to safe and accessible routes.
Plans to engage with local businesses to offer cycle to work schemes.
To date, Gear Up has set up e-bike lockers in Abington, Leadhills, Biggar and Crawfordjohn and seeks to link with local stakeholders, and can be contacted here.
