Peddling towards a new partnership.
Carstairs Junction Primary School has a strong, well established relationship with Health Valleys which continues to strengthen and develop. At the heart of our school values is inclusivity, and the engagement from Healthy Valleys ensures we can provide bespoke programmes to meet the needs of all learners in our ELC (Nursery), Mainstream and ASN classes.
In 2024-45 our school had excellent input from 'Gear Up' staff who provide information, guidance and hands on support with our whole school cycling project. Our 'Pedal Pals' project has allowed us to offer cycling opportunities to all of our senior pupils with vital support from Gerry and Adrienne. Gear Up has also provided additional cycling lessons to our P5-7 ASN pupils and have supported them to achieve their Level 1 Bikeability certificate. This would not have been possible without the input from Gerry and Adrienne.
Our families have also been given the opportunity to have their bikes maintained through a 'Dr Bike' session, and a small number of young people and their families have completed a bike maintenance course. Such opportunities to develop these life skills and improve health and wellbeing would not have been possible without the inputs from Gerry and Adrienne. In addition to this, Gear Up has funded two places for our staff team to attend 'Play on Pedals training'. Adrienne has since then supported a family Playing Together on Pedals session for our ELC pupils and their parents/carers. To help us role out the Play on Pedals programme in our ELC, we have the use of balance bikes on loan from Gear Up.
Through all of the provision and support they have offered, Gear Up has contributed towards our school achieving our Sport Scotland Silver Award and Cycling Friendly School Award from Cycling Scotland this session.
